Client Services
Who may receive meals from Chambersburg Meals on Wheels?

Anyone who has restricted mobility and who resides within our service area may receive meals.

What is the area served by Chambersburg Meals on Wheels?

Our service area covers the borough of Chambersburg and some adjacent neighborhoods, and the major portion of the unincorporated town of Fayetteville. If there is a question about a particular address, call us (at 717-263-7228 between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekdays) to find out if we can deliver to that address.

How much do meals cost?

The regular charge per meal was just reduced this month (January 2024)! From $3.40 to $3.00. Lower rates are available for those with limited income. After the initial interview, our Client Administrator will inform the client if he or she qualifies for a lower rate of $2.00 or $1.00 (EBT clients).

Does a client have to receive five meals each week?

No. An individual schedule is arranged for each client. Some receive as few as one or two meals a week.

Explain the holiday exceptions to the Monday-Friday meal deliveries.

When Christmas falls on a weekend no meal is delivered. If Christmas falls on a weekday, volunteers from Congregation Sons of Israel prepare and deliver a full dinner, plus gifts and poinsettias. When Christmas falls on a Thursday, no meals are delivered on that Friday. Both of these meals are provided free by the preparers.
We also do not ask our volunteers to deliver meals on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, but we encourage clients to have an extra meal delivered on the delivery day prior to each of those holidays if they wish.

Volunteering
How many volunteers are there?

We need around 260 volunteers to fill every schedule at the target level. We usually have somwhat fewer than that on our roster at any given time.

What is the target level for giving time as a volunteer?

Each volunteer is asked to give 1.5 to 2 hours, once every other week. Some can and do give more time; others may not be able to give as much.

If I do not drive, can I still help deliver meals?

Yes. Deliveries are made either by a driver working alone or by a team of driver and helper.

How does the driver know where to go?

When the meals are picked up at First Lutheran Church (or at the transfer point, for Fayetteville) there is an accompanying "Route Sheet" that lists the names and addresses for that day\'s deliveries, along with any special instructions.

What if a volunteer cannot serve at his or her scheduled time?

He or she should call in far enough ahead of time so that a substitute can be arranged.
