CHAMBERSBURG  Meals On Wheels

Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of the Meals on Wheels program. These remarkable people give generously of their time and energy to help homebound, usually lonely, and often very needy people who are our neighbors in greater Chambersburg and Fayetteville.
How much time?
Generally, volunteers work for an hour or two every other week. We need around 260 volunteers to fill this schedule completely. Unfortunately the number always seems to be spmewhat short of that, so some volunteers do double duty, or even sometimes triple duty, as they are able, to meet the need.
Kitchen Helpers
Meals are prepared and packaged each morning, Monday-Friday, so as to be ready by 11:00. The Head Cook directs the kitchen volunteers in the tasks of food prep, cooking, packing, and then cleanup. Some volunteers "specialize" in a task they enjoy doing; others fill in where they are needed.
Delivery Volunteers
Those who deliver the meals get to know the clients on their routes, and look forward to visiting briefly with each one and brightening his or her day. Most volunteers would say they receive more than they give from the exchange. They sometimes do small chores, and they can also note any signs of distress and raise an appropriate alarm if needed.
